The 4th Annual Beatport Music Awards

Beatport has celebrated the fourth annual Beatport Music Awards, and—in its own admittedly not-entirely-unbiased opinion—it was a biggest and best event yet, says Beatport.
For one thing, this year marked the first time that the BMAs were presented live and direct. The ceremony took place at the close of five days of sunkissed vibes at the Beatport Beach Party at Miami’s Gansevoort Hotel, where thousands of revelers were on hand to celebrate their favorite artists’ considerable accomplishments.
Awards were broken down into three categories: sales-based, community choice, and staff picks.
Top tracks by genre were determined entirely by sales—these were, hands down, the tunes that Beatport’s community singled out as the most important, far-reaching tracks of the year. They also created a new award, Beatport Breakthrough Artist, to recognize the top-selling artist who was new to Beatport in 2010.
In the Community Choice categories, they received over 10,000 votes, making those awards a key indicator of the tracks and artists that the Beatport community felt most passionate about. And finally, Beatport’s own staff voted on their own favorite tracks and artists of the year, including another new category, the Lifetime Achievement Award.

SonarSound Tokyo goes ahead for Japan and maintains the scheduled dates on the 2nd and 3rd of April
The 4th SonarSound Tokyo is maintaining its schedule and hopes to contribute to the recovery of normal life in the Japanese capital, and to pay tribute to the victims of the recent catastrophe.
Sonar will be donating 25% of the money from tickets sold for Sónar Barcelona and Sónar Galicia between 23 March and 1 April to the Japanese Red Cross.
Since we heard the first news about the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in north-eastern Japan on Friday, 11 March, at Sónar we have been in permanent contact with our Japanese partners and friends to ascertain the true extent of the situation as it has developed.
Today Sónar, in agreement with Beatink, its Japanese partner, has decided to go ahead with SonarSound Tokyo. We will continue to the monitor the situation closely and will make a immediate announcement should the circumstances change. We sincerely thank you for your support and once again wish to pass on our deepest sympathy to all of those who have suffered or been effected by these tragic events
The close links between Sónar and Japan since the festival’s early days have been vital in the decisions involved in managing the event at this delicate point in time. SonarSound Tokyo is a Japanese festival and in view of the country’s efforts and desire to restore normality to life in Tokyo, Sónar feels that it should make a contribution by maintaining its scheduled dates.
On the basis that the festival should make a positive contribution for victims of the catastrophe, Sonar will be donating 25% of the money from tickets sold for Sónar Barcelona and Sónar Galicia between 23 March and 1 April to the Japanese Red Cross. We have also determined that profits from SonarSound Tokyo will be donated and that we will be collecting donations from artists, venue, suppliers and guests.
Sónar’s relationship with Japan
In the words of Enric Palau, co-director of Sónar: Sónar’s relationship with Japan, its culture and artists has been very fruitful since the very beginning of the festival. Over its 18-year history, Sónar has featured more than 80 Japanese artists, and since 2002 our relationship with the country has been even closer as a result of SonarSound Tokyo. But perhaps the most important thing in this relationship between Sónar and Japan is the strong links of friendship that we have established with many artists. That is why we are deeply concerned about the tragedy that the country is experiencing and we would like to express our sincere good wishes and solidarity with the Japanese artistic community and to all the country’s citizens who have been affected by the tragedy, and we would also like to express our admiration and respect for the Japanese people’s strength of character and courage in the face of this terrible situation.
SonarSound Tokyo 2011
SonarSound Tokyo 2011 will take place in ageHa / Studio Coast on 2 and 3 April, as initially scheduled, with a line-up of the highest level which features several of the most important artists on the international scene, a strong contingent of Japanese musicians.
The performances by international artists include shows by American post-rock group Battles, Flying Lotus (a maestro of instrumental hip-hop) and Kode 9 and will also present some of the most important Japanese artists working today, such as the well-known names of Ryoji Ikeda and DJ Krush, as well as Y. Sunahara, Takagi Masakatsu, Rovo, Azzsssx, DJ Baku, Altz, Sabi, dot i/o, Daisuke Tanabe and Open Reel Ensemble, and the latter two will also be present in the line-up of Sónar 2011 in Barcelona, between 16 and 18 June.
SonarSound Tokyo is organised in collaboration with Red Bull Music Academy, which will stage its line-up in the smaller space at ageHa-Studio Coast.

Winter Music Conference 2011 Fest vs Ultra Cornerstone
Posted: March 24, 2011 Filed under: Article, Artist, Artists, Conference, Electronic Music, Festivals, Lineup, music, Ultra Fest, Uncategorized, WMC Leave a comment »Dates have been announced for the 2011 Miami Winter Music Conference: March 8th through March 12th, two weeks earlier than expected.
The new dates may not seem too important at face value, but they threaten to disrupt the conference’s usual chemistry. For instance, by now many promoters will have already locked down artists and venues for the last weekend in March, when the WMC has historically taken place, and many more will have arranged flights and hotel reservations. Perhaps most importantly, the three-day Ultra Music Festival, normally a cornerstone of WMC, is already selling tickets for the 25th through the 27th of March, two weeks after the conference officially ends.
Numerous artists have already voiced their upset over the new dates on Twitter, including Swedish House Mafia Member Steve Angello, who wrote “If you want to experience all the good parties in Miami, don’t go on March 8-12,” then later “Will the real WMC please stand up !!!” A press release sent out last night by WMC’s organizers offers no explanation for this change in plans.
The conference has also moved to a new venue this year: the Miami Beach Convention Center, just a few minutes walk from South Beach’s most vibrant stretch. This is a much more central spot than either the Eden Roc Hotel or the Miami Beach Resort and Spa, WMC’s previous venues, both of which are located a cab ride away from most of the conference’s goings on.
WMC released a statement last night claiming that Ultra Music Festival’s choice of dates breaks a contract between the two parties. According to WMC, the contract stipulated that “the 2011 Ultra Music Festival would be presented during the five-day period in February, March or April 2011 designated and promoted by WMC as the ‘WMC week.’” In other words, Ultra Music Festival was obligated to schedule their events to coincide with WMC. The organizers go on to say that “date selection is based exclusively on venue availability” and that they were “blindsided” by Ultra Music Festival’s choice of dates.
Ultra Music Festival have responded with their own statement, which breaks down the dilemma like this: WMC couldn’t book a hotel for the end of March, and Ultra Music Festival isn’t allowed to coincide with the Calle Ocho street fair, so the two parties just couldn’t work it out this year.

World over well known magazine ‘The Economist’ talks about German capitol Berlin considered as a hub for music and video technology companies
Posted: March 15, 2011 Filed under: Article, Artist, Artists, Electronic Music, Magazines, music, Uncategorized | Tags: 2011, berlin, City, Music Technologies 1 Comment »
Berlin is emerging as a hub for music technology companies trying to dramatically change the way we make and listen to music …
[Taken from MORE INTELLIGENT LIFE]
When Richie Hawtin, a Canadian electronic musician and DJ, did a live set in Berlin using just two iPads, he was not just demonstrating the lightening hand speed and progressive sounds that have made him famous. He was showcasing how he has been able to push back musical boundaries by embracing technological tools created and invented in the city. These creations are now beginning to influence the music industry at large.
Hawtin, who was playing a set using software programmes on two iPads which mimic a DJ’s two sets of decks, is one of a growing band of artists and music exiles who use the vibrancy and freedom of Berlin as fuel for their work. “I needed somewhere that was inspiring and where there were like-minded musicians and artists, somewhere you could still experiment with music and with life. Berlin is so liberal in so many different ways; there’s an amazing club scene, there’s a great development software tech scene, there are so many resources here,” says Hawtin.
At a time when big record labels are hemorrhaging cash, Berlin’s nascent music technology start-ups have created a blueprint for what the music industry of the future could look like. Instead of viewing the internet and digital technology as threats, these companies are using it all to create “a new paradigm, a new construct in the way people use music,” says Mark Mulligan, a music industry analyst who helps oversee consumer-product strategy in the London office of Forrester Research, a leading global technology and market research company.
SoundCloud is one such innovative company. A Berlin-based online social network for musicians, it has accumulated 1.3m artists and record labels—including Kylie Minogue, Domino Records, Zero 7 and Snoop Dogg—since it launched in October 2008. “We now have hundreds of users from major record labels all over the world,” says Alexander Ljung, the company’s co-founder and CEO (pictured, above). SoundCloud enables file-sharing between users, and Ljung says that record labels are using it to distribute music to journalists.
Mulligan envisions platforms like SoundCloud playing an important role in the not too distant future, when music will be seamlessly distributed via iPhone apps and social-networking sites such as Facebook. Listeners will be able to create their own music mashups and share them with friends.
When Ljung and Eric Wahlforss dreamt up their idea for SoundCloud in 2007, the Swedish pair decided Berlin was the place to get it started. (They visited the German capital briefly, and decided to set up shop the following week.) Ljung says this decision was influenced by the fact that Berlin had already established itself as a hub for music-technology companies, such as Ableton and Native Instruments, both of which create software and some hardware for musicians.
The companies that are “not struggling like crazy at the moment” tend to be those that are making tools that help people make music, says Ljung. “You are seeing more people than ever actually involved in making music. This is the really unique growing area.”
Daniel Haver, the head of Native Instruments, describes his business as a “quintessentially Berlinish company”. Fifteen years ago, Native Instruments began in a small home office. Now it is a multi-million euro company employing about 250 people, in a nascent business district known as Spree riverfront in Kreuzberg.
“If you look back at the history of Berlin, back to the ‘20s and ‘30s and before, it has always been a music city, a place of great creativity,” Haver says. “We always collaborate closely with people involved in the city’s electronic-music scene to gather and refine ideas.”

Beatport and EMI sign licensing deal
Posted: February 19, 2011 Filed under: Distributor, Electronic Music, music, Record Label, Uncategorized | Tags: beatport, Distributors, Emi, Record Label Leave a comment »
Beatport has signed an international licensing deal with EMI Music that will allow them to stock titles from the English company’s vast catalog of music.
As the fourth largest business group in the recording industry, EMI holds dozens of record labels under its umbrella, from indie imprints like Mute and DFA Records to Virgin Music Group and all of its sublabels (including Astralwerks). At this point neither party can estimate how much more music will be added to Beatport as a result of the deal, though given the scale of EMI’s catalog, the difference is likely to be substantial. At the very least, the deal will fill some conspicuous gaps in Beatport’s selection, including releases from Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, LCD Soundsystem, Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk to name a few.
“EMI’s catalogue is a significant addition to Beatport’s repertoire of the most influential and groundbreaking artists in the dance music space,” said Beatport CEO Matthew Adell. “We are thrilled to make such a rich and diverse catalogue available to our customers.”
The first release through the new deal is Alex Metric and Steve Angello’s Open Your Eyes, a new single through EMI’s own Positiva label. The instrumental mix of the track is currently available, and the rest of the single will follow in March.

The Sonar fest team, announces that “Finisterrae, the Sónar film”, wins top podoim at the 40th International Film Festival Rotterdam
Posted: February 7, 2011 Filed under: Article, Awards, Conference, Electronic Music, Festivals, Films, Sonar, Uncategorized | Tags: 40th International Film Festival Rotterdam, Finisterrae, sonar 2011 Leave a comment »
“The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), also known as the ‘European Sundance’ because of its specialisation and prestige among independent film-makers, has awarded the Tiger, the top prize at the event, to Finisterrae, the Sónar 2010 film directed by Sergio Caballero.” says Sonar Team
Finisterrae is Sergio Caballero’s debut as a film director. Caballero, a multidisciplinary musician and artist, is also the co-director of Sónar, the International Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art, and every year is responsible for the image that the event creates as the backdrop for its campaigns.
The jury for the Awards described Finisterrae as follows: ‘The outsider in this competition. Searching for the boundaries in this festival, for the edgy, the off-beat.’
The prize-giving ceremony was held on Friday 4 February, in Rotterdam’s Oude Luxor Theater, with a performance by Lee Ranaldo, member of the jury, guitarist, composer and co-founder of the group Sonic Youth.
As well as the Spanish film, two Asian films, also by first-time directors, have been awarded: The Journals of Musan by Park Jung-Bum (South Korea) and Eternity by Sivaroj Kongsakul (Thailand).
The Festival Jury:
As well as Lee Ranaldo, the other members of the Tiger Awards jury were the Argentinian filmmaker, scriptwriter and producer Lucrecia Martel; the director of the EYE Film Institute Netherlands and the ex-director of the Rotterdam Festival, Sandra den Hamer; the Romanian filmmaker Andrei Ujica and the Thai filmmaker Wisit Sasanatieng.
About the film Finisterrae :
Finisterrae is no ordinary film. The idea of the film is highly unusual, with an approach based on filming and obtaining images first, and then creating the script afterwards, before finally adding the dialogues. This process led to experimentation with the classic structure of a “road movie” and the freedom to work which the lack of a fixed script provides.
The result is strange and enigmatic cinema, with a very particular atmosphere, filled with unusual plastic images and an ironic and surrealistic sense of humour.
Finisterrae tells the story of two ghosts who are tired of living in the shadows, and decide to walk along the Way of Saint James to the end of the world, and once there, to begin an ephemeral earthly existence in the world of the living. It is an introspective journey through inhospitable landscapes, during which the protagonists meet strange beings, wild animals and surreal characters. They must deal with unexpected situations, face their own tensions and come to terms with their doubts arising from the fact that they are ghosts.
Finisterrae is an Advanced Music/Sonar Festival production with Eddie Saeta in collaboration with Xacobeo 2010.
